The W&L Eagles varsity football team traveled to the 2A undefeated King William Cavaliers on Friday, September 27. It’s not how you start it’s how you finish or is it best to finish the way you start? Head Coach Joe Taylor said, “Coaches lose game and players win them and it showed tonight in the players heart and will to play to the end.” The Eagles had the Cavaliers in third and long deep in their territory until D. Claiborne went up the left sideline for a 70-yard touchdown run to make it (0-6) with 10:46 to go in the first quarter. The visitors matched a big play with a big play when Craig Shepherd gathered in the kickoff and galloped 85 yards up the middle of the field to tie the game (6-6). DeWayne Reynolds was next to cross the goal line on a 1yd touchdown run to give his team a (12-6) advantage with 2:24 left. Damien Henry-Johnson picked off a Cavalier pass to put his team in good field position. James ‘LJ’ Kelly capped the drive with a 15yd run up the right sideline to make it (18-6) with 11:49 to go before halftime. The Eagles defense stopped the home team on the one-yard line with 6:19 to go.
