School may not officially start until next week, but the W&L Varsity Volleyball team is in full swing. Finishing their first week of the 2017 season undefeated, the Lady Eagles are already 2-0. Under the helm of veteran Head coach Drew Hutt, W&L’s young team returns to 1A Northern Neck Conference after a two year shove into 2A. The completion is very fierce but the Eagles are up for the challenge.
The home season opener was held on Monday, August 21, against King and Queen Central. Sweeping the Royal Tigers winning 3-0 (10-25, 10-25, 13-25), W&L utilized the time on the court to hone their skills. Losing 6 seniors to graduation last year, the team needs to shuffle and rebuild, and Coach Hutt has the experience to make it happen fast and smoothly. Leading kills against King and Queen was Junior Anna Boswell with 3. Captain Anne Carter Harding led in serving with 8 aces and Sophomore Makaila Veney made her mark in her first varsity game with the lone block, 3 aces, and 3 kills.
W&L hosted Caroline on Thursday, August 24th in a closer scoring game but still pulled out the shut out win 3-0. (10-25, 22-25, 20-25). Anna Boswell led serving with 5 aces while Harding and Veney both earned 4 kills each. Veney also earned 3 blocks and is looking to be a strong new asset to the talented Eagles. Libero Alondra Anderson had 10 digs with only one error and is a solid defensive base needed to remain competitive.
The Lady Eagles will hit the road for their matches next week but will return to the W&L nest on September 7 hosting the King William Cavaliers. JV starts at 5:30, Varsity to follow around 6:30. Come support W&L!
