The spring ELs/MEP Family Night was held April 24, 2019 at Washington & Lee High School. Parents and students received free resources, including a literacy bag filled with bilingual books. Families also received “career” hats that students could customize. The program emphasized high school completion focusing on diplomas, GPAs, scholarships, and funding sources. This year, Dr. Maricel Quintana-Baker, one of the founders of VALHEN (Virginia Latino Higher Education Network) spoke to the assembled parents and students about the many opportunities available to them. She also gave parents information about the summer camp for Hispanic youth at Virginia Tech. W&L junior, Guillermo Velazquez, who attended last year, spoke to the group about his experiences.
