“I experienced the weightlessness of a hummingbird once; it’s like being touched by God,” said Joanie Millward during one of the numerous bird lectures held during the inaugural Osprey Fest in Colonial Beach. While this talk was on hummingbirds, and had veered into hand feeders you can use to bring one into your hand, the town was full of experts on all types of birds this weekend.
Courtney French of Wild Birds Unlimited in Fredericksburg led the discussion on hummingbirds. These tiny birds, which weigh 1/10th of an ounce travel a remarkable distance every year. They spend their summers in the Eastern United States and winter in South America. For a bird that weighs less than a nickel that is an astounding difference.
