Washington & Lee’s boy’s soccer team came into district play on the heels of yet another sloppy tie, this time against West Point. They were anything but sloppy as they took to the pitch at Rappahannock High School.
Before the fans had completely settled into their seats, W&L was on the board. 45 seconds into the game, Pope Antunez was stopped from point blank range. The ball deflected out to the left side, and Luis Chipres drove it home.
The Eagles controlled the game from the outset with great passing in the midfield and attack rushes beginning with the defense. In the 28th minute, on one such rush, Jacob Daiger fed the ball up the middle to a wide-open Chipres who scored again.
The first half ended with W&L leading 2-0, but as the second half opened, they almost seemed to forget they had another 40 minutes of play in front of them. Four minutes later, Rappahannock’s Ernesto Cordova snuck around the Eagle defense, which had failed to clear, and cut the lead in half.
