Keeping a local business alive in Oak Grove

Posted on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 11:48 am

While much of the focus in Westmoreland County is typically on Montross and Colonial Beach, Oak Grove got quite a bit of mention in the schedule at the Board of Supervisors meeting in October. The first in this case was a public hearing where JoAnn and David Drummond were applying for a special exception permit for an automotive repair garage. The presentation was made for the Drummonds by Darrin Lee of the County’s land use office.

The site is at the end of Worrell Lane, in what’s known as the Washington Magesterial District, roughly a mile from the county’s boundary with King George County. The place had been used informally since the 90’s, and the Drummonds previously owned a repair business near the Bowie Road intersection, but had to close shop and relocate, taking some of the vehicles there with them.

It was a complaint filed to the land use office about unauthorized activity taking place at night that led to the application back during the board’s meeting that month. The owner was in the process of getting the necessary permits and licenses, but the way the property there is currently zoned, a special exception is required if they are to run the garage.
