The Colonial Beach Drifters traveled to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday to play in the Endless Summer Volleyball Tournament hosted by the Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club.  The tournament, which is the largest high school volleyball tournament in the nation, was played at three venues, Tidewater Volleyball Center, Virginia Beach Fieldhouse, and Virginia Wesleyan.

The Lady Drifters played five games on Saturday and their opponents included Central Virginia, Oak Tree Academy, Warwick, Norview, and Chincoteague.  All games were played to a best of three with the third game being played to 15.  The Drifters went 2-3 overall making their record for the season 3-4.

The Drifters started out the morning with a 0-2 loss to Central Virginia only to bounce back in the second game to pick up a 2-0 win over Oak Tree.  After a two-hour break, Warwick and Norview were just too much as the Drifters fell 0-2 to both teams.  In the final game of the day, the Drifters were able to dig deep and come out with a 2-0 victory over Chincoteague.

This was a great experience for our girls.  This was the first tournament that our girls have played in.  I was unsure how they would react to playing in a gym where three or four other games are being played at the same time.  Overall, I was pleased with how our girls played and reacted to the setting.

Standouts for the Drifters were freshmen middle hitter Kenzie Cox and sophomore libero Katelyn Dunaway.  Kenzie Cox had a great day for the Drifters recording 13 kills, two blocks, and serving 87%.  Katelyn Dunaway played as solid as I’ve ever seen her.  She’s starting to really come in to her own as the libero and it’s showing.  Her passing percentage was at an all-time high, which allowed for us to get better sets and kills throughout the tournament.

The Drifters were scheduled to play on Tuesday at West Point and Thursday at home vs. Middlesex. Varsity begins at 7 p.m. followed by the JV at 6 p.m.
