The W&L Lady Eagles varsity basketball team faced and defeated the West Point Lady Pointers at home on Monday, December 2. Head Coach Michael Fisher stated, “We have three returning players and only two starters from a state caliber team.” The Lady Eagles took an early two-point lead after the first period (10-8). The teams played and even second period with both scoring ten points and the home team maintaining their small (20-18) advantage at the half. “It was a slow start to the game; we just have to get the players to trust the system and the other players. With two freshmen and a sophomore that doesn’t have a lot of playing experience, it’ll take a while” explained Head Coach Michael Fisher. The Lady Pointers tied the game (20-20) early in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles took back the lead for good (22-20) with 7:00 minutes to play in the third. The teams traded free-throws before W&L went on a ten-point run to pull away from the visitors (33-23) with 1:18 to go still in the third. The Lady Eagles were up (33-26) at the end of the three stanzas. With a lead into the fourth, W&L only had to take care of the ball and hit their free throws to come away with a win in the first game of the season. They stretched the lead to eleven (42-31) with 3:34 to play then got the biggest lead of the game (46-31) with 2:24 to go. They would win the game (49-36). Head Coach Michael Fisher said, “Devonna Fisher has to start fast and get the other players involved so they’ll play harder on both ends. We got some good play on the block from LaKiyah Clarke and she hit her free throws to increase our lead.” Devonna Fisher had 16 points, 8 assist, 12 steals, 7 rebounds, LaKiyah Clarke 15pts, 7rebs, Kearrah Delano 6pts, 5rebs, Taliyah Ball 5pts, 2ast, 2stls, Jayniyah Gaskins 5pts, 8rebs, Anya Baker 3pts, 2rebs. W&L will play Charles City at home on December 11, and at Maggie Walker on December 13.
