The W&L Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team were home versus the Colonial Beach Lady Drifters on Thursday, October 18. They defeated the Lady Drifters (3-1) to close out their season as the NND regular season champions. With the ambiance of senior night, the Lady Drifters were not clicking in the first set. They were behind early (5-9) then (10-14); they went ahead (18-16) but loss (19-25) to be down (0-1). After the change of courts and a time out, the Lady Eagles were more into their game in the second set. The team increased their communication, made better passes, and covered more of the court to play the way they had played most of the season. They went ahead (5-1), (12-6), (19-9), and won (25-14) to tie the sets (1-1). The Lady Drifters jumped ahead in the third set (2-7); the home team tied the score (8-8, 9-9). Then the visitors went up again (15-9) before the Lady Eagles tied the game again (15-15, 16-16). Makaila Veney served out the set with eight straight points to win (25-17) and a (2-1) advantage. The Lady Eagles took control of the fourth set (7-5), (12-9), (20-11) and won (25-13) to end the match (3-1). When they communicate, get their first serves in, and pass the ball, the Lady Eagles will make it tough for the other area teams. They finished the season (15-4) and the number one seed in the NND. Megan Smith had 7 kills, AC Harding 7 kills, 6 aces, 8 assts, Makaila Veney 7 kills, 5 blocks, Anna Boswell 6 kills, 3 aces, 13 digs and Christian Ransome 3 aces, 14 digs, and 12 serves received. The NND volleyball tournament will begin this week at the higher seeds home court.
