The summer is nearing an end, and with August now passed, September is upon us, which means one of the final two First Fridays of the year. Initially thought of as just an art walk, First Fridays has grown in the years since into something much bigger, with each First Friday being somewhat akin to a miniature Fall Festival on its own with live music, vendors, and food trucks.
This month, the musical entertainment comes from the Atkinson Trio with Kathy Mapp as a special guest. Vice Mayor Terry Cosgrove could barely keep back his excitement, not just for Mapp, but for the event as a whole, to say nothing about the rest of the council.
“She’s a Joan Baez-ish guitar and harmonica singer from Stratford Harbor, if I remember right, so it should be a good time,” the Vice Mayor commented, “The weather is getting nice, we’ve got restaurants open late, we had fantastic vendors last time and I hope we do this month too. We also appreciate the Ruritan support.”
The Ruritans will be out and about, helping put up flags for the upcoming Fall Festival, and typically have a dessert item of their own, whether it’s peach cobbler or strawberry shortcake. Craft beer and wine are also available, and should the heavens decide to split open, well, there’s always the firehouse. Each one so far has attracted throngs of people eager to sample what Montross and those living in and around it have to offer. From the looks of things, this may well be one of the busiest ones yet.
