Colonial Beach Town Council (TC) announced a first for the town at the March regular meeting – the first woman police chief for the town. Elizabeth “Libby” Legg accepted the position of chief following a long search.
With two rounds of advertising, 30 applicants, and TC using the Virginia Municipal League (VML) to help narrow the candidates to six to eight of them, the search took many months before the final interview of the top two candidates.
Immediately following the interviews, neither candidate accepted the job. The TC sent out the second advertisement at that time. However, a few days later, Legg agreed to accept the position, ending her time as Chief of Police on the Ferrum College Campus.
Her resignation came at a rough time for Ferrum due to an ongoing investigation into college administrators allegedly holding resident assistants while their rooms were searched for illegal items. The Ferrum College police had nothing to do with the holding of the students nor did they conduct the search according to multiple reports from the campus.
