Majors, Juniors capture District 15 championships

Posted on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 9:55 am

Proud coaches, players and fans were excited on Monday evening after the Westmoreland Major and Junior Baseball All-Stars won the Virginia Little League District 15 Championship earlier this week. This qualifies both teams to compete in their respective state tournaments.

Westmoreland County Little League sealed two district championships Monday night.  The Westmoreland Junior Baseball team (ages 13 & 14) defeated Caroline 14 – 4 in a game shortened due to the slaughter rule.  This was Westmoreland’s second consecutive championship in the junior division.  The Westmoreland Major Baseball team (ages 11 & 12) earned a tough fought, come from behind win to capture the district crown with an 13 – 8 victory over King William.

The junior team was dominant throughout the tournament, which was held in Middlesex.  Proving its juggernaut status, the group of young teenagers scored over ten runs in each of its four games, rolled out seven different pitchers, and had a total run differential of +29.  They take a great amount of momentum in to the state tournament which will be held in Bristol.

The major baseball team was a bit of an underdog.  Four of the team’s five wins were in come from behind fashion, earning the group the nickname “cardiac kids” from assistant coach George Hunter.  In a true showing of guts and grit, the Westmoreland County boys of summer took the field at Caroline County Little League complex for the last time Monday night and once again, came from behind to outlast a tough King William squad.  Our boys trailed 8 – 6 in the fifth inning, but rattled off 5 unanswered runs over the last two frames to earn the win.

What an outstanding accomplishment for both of these teams!  We would like to offer a huge thank you to the volunteer coaches, both on the all-star roster and those who helped out during the regular season; without you all this would not be possible.  Congratulations to the players on a job Well Done!  And, keep up the good work in state championship competition.

To our community, as you would expect, attending a little league state tournament is a huge expense.  Our players will be around town over the next week and a half working hard to raise enough money to cover the cost of their trip.  Drop a dollar in their bucket at Food Lion.  Buy a brownie at a bake sale at a local church.  Help out any way you can.  Let’s pull together and make this a great experience for these two special groups of young athletes.
