The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity basketball team moved to the next round of the conference 43 tournament, after a (47-43) win over the Rappahannock Raiders on Monday February 13. In the low scoring first period, the teams were tied (6-6) with two minutes to play. The Drifters were ahead by three (12-9) at the end of the first. The visitors closed the score to (12-11) in the first minute of the second period then the Drifters scored three to make it (15-11). The Raiders tied the game (15-15) with 3:33 to go, but the home team took the lead at the half (24-21). The Drifters were up by six (27-21) after a three-pointer then by seven (30-23) with 6:36 left in the third. A (7-2) run by the Raiders cut the advantage to two (32-30) heading into the fourth quarter. The Raiders tied the score (34-34) with 6:30 to go. The teams traded baskets and were tied again (38-38) with four minutes left. The home team scored seven straight points to lead (45-38) with two minutes left in the fourth. The Raiders scored the next five points to make it (45-43) with 50 secs to play. That’s as close as they get; their next few shots would bounce off the rim, and the Drifters would move on to face the Lancaster Red Devils. The two regular season games were closely contested with the Red Devils winning by 2 and 3 points in each game. The Drifters were behind early and had to play catch up for three quarters. They couldn’t overcome the deficit and loss the semis (49-62). Congrats to the Drifters for a hard played and fought season.
