Colonial Beach Public Schools named Kevin Newman as their new superintendent effective August 1. Newman is presently principal of King George Middle School, but is not new to CBPS. He was principal of Colonial Beach Elementary School prior to his time at KGMS.
Newman is a graduate of Washington and Lee High School, Bridgewater College, and will soon graduate from Virginia Tech with a doctorate in Educational Leadership. He is also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Upon his unanimous vote into the position, the small crowd burst into applause and then Newman took the podium to re-introduce himself to the Drifter community. He said, “I’m excited to be back in the black and gold, it’s something I take pride in.”
Newman spoke of his passion for Colonial Beach Schools and the passion he had for bringing the community and school system back together. He also spoke of the responsibility of the school and town to work together for the good of the student body.
In his tenure as CBES principal, Newman helped to bring the school onto the Governor’s School of Excellence list. This was from a school that was not making adequate yearly progress and that was facing more federal intrusion.
Newman faces a time of upheaval as CBPS does not have an elementary school in place for the 2014-2015 school year as of yet. The time frame for the modular units to be in place is currently November. The SB and administration are working on a solution for the youngest students until the modular units are in place.
