Eighty-five year old Lucius Calvin Newton of Montross is a loyal, dedicated and hard working community volunteer. He dutifully helps others in the community whether the task is requested or not! If a neighbor is in need of a ride to church, the doctor’s office or the near-by supermarket, he smiles, and performs the task as he shares a story of his life growing up as a young man in Westmoreland County. His famous stories are usually short and funny, long and sad, or down right unbelievable. He is never without a “tall tale,” or funny joke for his attentive audience.
As a faithful, loving and lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church, he proudly helps takes care of the cemetery and the grounds. During the church’s “Men Day” programs and “Fundraising” activities, he helps plan, serve, and takes an active part in the cleanup duties. Each spring Lucius cultivates parts of his property and plants corn and other vegetables. At harvest time, he gathers the vegetables in bags and baskets and proudly shares the bounty with grateful and appreciative members of his family, neighbors and friends.
Lucius has a great love and interest in the youth of the county. His “Dream” is to have a large modern center for the county’s youth, the seniors and members of the community. He said, “I want the center to be a place for students to visit, as a learning area. A place for youth sports activities on the weekends, a meeting place for seniors and the community citizens to have programs and special events.”
