Northern Neck Rivermen hold off Titans

In their second game of the season, the Northern Neck Rivermen were pushed to the last seconds against the Virginia Titans. The game started rather easily for the Rivermen; their defense put the Titans in a passing situation and linebacker Sid Thompson picked off the short pass over the middle to give them good field position. The offense wasted little time getting into goal to go yardage; Adeola Ogunwenmo burst up the middle for a five-yard touchdown run. Mike Howard followed with a six-yard run in the second quarter, and Barrett Hollingsworth added the extra point to increase the lead to 14-0 with 5:42 left in the first half. The Titans scored twice with passes within three minutes to tie the score 14-14 at the half.

Late in the third quarter, the Titans took the lead 17-14 for the first time on a field goal with 5:54 left.  Adeola Ogunwenmo crossed the goal line again to put his team back in the lead 21-17. Antonio Fernanders’ touchdown gave his team a 27-17 lead going into the final quarter. After the Titans scored, Mike Howard scored to give the team a little breathing room with a ten point led. Their opponent would not go away easily; they pushed their way down the field to cut the lead to three, 34-31, with 9:20 left in the game. The teams went back and forth with the Titans marching down the field and having a goal to go opportunity in the final minutes. With thirty seconds left, the ball on the two-yard line, fourth down and goal, the opposing coach decided to go for it. The quarterback bobbled the ball and it was recovered by the Rivermen to end the game 34-31.

Laslow Pickett and Sid Thompson were all over the field assisting with 11 and 13 tackles respectively. They were aided by Devonte Reynolds with an interception and Derrick Manning and Calvin Jones with 5 and 7 tackles. The Rivermen’s next home game is August 2, 2014; kickoff 7 p.m.
