Volunteerism was the theme of the night on Saturday Dec. 7, as members of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department recognized their compatriots for their hours of dedicated service in not only answering calls, but in training for readiness.
Fire Chief George Edelen from the Newburg, Maryland fire department attended the event along with company president Stephan Johnson. Edelen noted in his remarks that the beginnings of the volunteer fire department era began in the 18th century with paid firefighters not appearing until the mid 19th century. He lauded both for their dedicated service to their communities. Edelen spoke of the commitment, time, training, integrity, and sacrifice that volunteers give to their organizations. He congratulated the Oak Grove department on the perseverance that they have shown through the years.
President Larry Jones who announced the coveted Fireman of the Year and Member of the Year awards followed Edelen. These awards are voted on by members of the department. This year the recipient of both of the awards was Jack Balderson.
