Obituaries, Week of April 30: Burge, Harcum, Johnson, Jenkins, Prescott, Niswander, Whicker,

 Muriel Burge, 71, of Colonial Beach went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 25, 2014.

She was born Jan. 19, 1943 in Charlottesville to the late Roy Herbert Beach and Katherine Bryant Beach.

She was employed with Safeway Stores in Charlottesville and was transferred to Colonial Beach where she met and married Robert Burge.

Precious memories of her will be eternally treasured by her husband of 25 years, Robert Burge; sister, Barbara Jean Fisher of Crozet, and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews and great-nephews of Charlottesville who also cherish her memory and will miss her greatly.

No services are planned.

Devin Lamont Harcum passed away April 20, 2014.

Devin was born Sept. 10, 1984 to Bruce and Cheryl Harcum and was educated in Northumberland County public schools.  He was employed with Superior Paving for many years until he was unable to perform his job duties.

Surviving are a daughter, Ayliza Harcum; parents, Cheryl (Jerry) Henry and Bruce (Michelle) Harcum; sister, Natalia Christian-Braxton (Lawrence); one step-sister, LaTasha Jackson; two step-brothers, Jerrell Jackson and Sinclair Smalls (Renee); grandparents, Donald and Minister Shirley Harcum; five uncles; five aunts; five great-uncles; eight great-aunts and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 26 at First Baptist Church, Heathsville.

Interment services were held at Galilee United Methodist Church cemetery, Edwardsville.

Services of Comfort and Trust were provided by the Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home.


 Earl Wilson “Stumpy” Johnson passed away April 2, 2014 at Carriage Hill Nursing Home in Fredericksburg. He was born June 9, 1948 in Westmoreland County.

He was a faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Montross, which he helped build and where he sang with the first choir, Golden Stars.

Surviving are his fiancée, Patricia Ann Ball of Tappahannock; two sisters, Helen J. Ashton and Mary J Hackett (Joseph); two brothers, Clarence W. Johnson (Annie) and Robert R. Johnson (Annie) all of Montross; a devoted aunt, Mrs. Catherine T. Johnson; an uncle, Charles W. Tate; a foster brother, Zack Nelson; a sister-in-law, Ann Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held April 9, 2014 at Morning Star Baptist Church, Montross. Interment services were held at the Poor Jack Cemetery in Montross.

Services of Comfort and Trust were provided by the Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home.


William Edward “Billy” Jenkins, 73, of Colonial Beach passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

Billy was a bodyman and waterman.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Drummond Jenkins; three daughters, Tracey Von Trivett (Danny), Kellie L. Yeatman (Al) all of Colonial Beach, Billie Jo Hynson (Mark) of Horner’s Beach, Va; a brother, Alvin “Pudgie” Jenkins (Margaret) of Oak Grove; seven grandchildren, Charles “Chaz” Herndon, Trevor Yeatman, Dillon R. Herndon (Desiree), Danielle Von-Holland Howeth (Billy), William “Will” Trivett, Owen Wilson Hynson and Von Hamilton Hynson; two great-grandchildren, Maddox William and Willow Von-Holland Howeth.

A graveside service was held on Friday, April 25 in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Oak Grove.  Rev. Willard Bowen officiated.

Bonnie Sue Prescott passed away April 15, 2014. She was born June 28, 1967 in Winchester to Betty L. Fitzwater and John D. Fitzwater.

She was educated in Frederick County Public Schools.  In her early adult years Bonnie enjoyed pushing snow and operating heavy equipment while working with VDOT. Bonnie worked until 2010 when she resigned as the store manager of Rite Aid in Callao.

Predeceased by her father John D. Fitzwater she is survived by her mother, Betty L. Fitzwater; a daughter, Jennifer Fisher; four sons, Clem “Allen” Fitzwater, Jeter “J.R.” Barrett, Anthony “Mickey” Bibbens and David “Ryan” Gray; nine grandchildren; one brother, John Fitzwater; two sisters, Debra Fitzwater and Brenda Fitzwater Gonzalez and a host of other relatives and friends.

A service of Remembrance was held April 26 at Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home.

Services of Comfort and Trust were provided by the Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home.


Jack Niswander, 80, of Colonial Beach joined his heavenly family on Good Friday, April 18, 2014, at home with his wife by his side.

He was a charter member of the Herndon Lions Club and owned Northern Virginia Tractor Sales and Service.  Jack was an avid woodworker and enjoyed playing cards and board games with friends and family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Niswander; his sons, Griff Niswander and wife Nancy and Greg Niswander and wife Sandi; stepchildren Chris, Debbie and Teresa, and a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Carl D. and Clara Lorine Niswander; brother, Carl; and sister, Doris Spates Helz.

The family received friends on Wednesday, April 23, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach.

A private graveside service was held at Sterling Cemetery, Loudoun County. Jack’s family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Colonial Beach United Methodist Church or Colonial Beach Fire Department or Rescue Squad.

Eugene M. Whicker, 82, of Virginia Beach passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at Heritage Hall.

He was the former Mayor of  Colonial Beach and Broker/Owner of Coldwell Banker Whicker  Realty in Colonial Beach.

He is survived by two sons, Chris Whicker of Virginia Beach and Kevin Whicker and his wife Maria, of  Colonial Beach; four  grandchildren and two great –grandchildren.

A memorial service will be  held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Colonial Beach United Methodist Church.  A private burial will take place at a later date.
