Martha Spencer Fidler, 84, of Sharps, passed away on January 18, 2014.  She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on July 24, 1929, to Dr. Hunter Boyd Spencer and Kathleen Root Spencer.  She graduated from EC Glass High School in 1946 and attended Westhampton College.  In 1947, she moved with her family to Sharps, Virginia, where she met Walther Balderson Fidler.  They were married in 1950 and spent the rest of their lives together in the village of Sharps.

Martha spent her time creating a home for her husband and children, as well as for many of the children of Sharps.  Her home was always an active one and was the focal point for family reunions and gatherings with friends.  She had an open heart and a listening ear for anyone who needed comfort or advice.  Martha used her natural skills in the areas of carpentry, electrical wiring, and plumbing to fix anything that was broken and was a great organizer of family, church, and village activities.  Her organizational skills were always needed when it came time to pack the car for the annual vacation to Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

As her children grew up and left the home, Martha increased her volunteer activities in the community.  She especially enjoyed her time working at Granny’s Attic in Warsaw.  Throughout her adult life, she was a faithful member and supporter of Milden Presbyterian Church.  She participated in many aspects of the church life, including serving as an Elder and as an active member of the Women of the Church.

Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister Katherine (Kitty) Philpott.  She is survived by her children, Kathleen Fidler Beane (George), Frances Fidler Childs (Wayne), Jane Fidler Dungan, James Robert Fidler II (Tristin); foster daughter, Nancy Thurman McGuire (Joe); her brothers, Hunter Boyd Spencer, Jr. (Virginia) and Robert McCray Spencer (Frances); 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Milden Presbyterian Church on January 24, 2014, at noon with a reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Milden Cemetery Fund, c/o Nancy Davis, P.O. Box 8, Sharps, VA 22548.  The family also wishes to thank Hospice of Virginia and Elsie Greene, Martha’s caretaker, for the outstanding care they provided.

Lawrence Filkoski, Sr., 72, of Warsaw, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.  Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., he spent the last 38 years living in the Northern Neck of Virginia where he worked as a self employed building contractor with his sons and was recently retired.  He attended Carter Memorial SDA Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joan C. Filkoski; four sons, Butch Filkoski (Shelagh), Montross, Stephen Filkoski (Lyvouch), Woodstock, Md., Larry Filkoski, Jr. (Britney), King George, Va. and Paul Filkoski (Jennifer), Montross; a brother, William Hamilton (Linda), Abingdon, Va.; a sister, Patricia McDonald (Russell), Pittsburgh, Pa., and 13 grandchildren.
