Obituaries, Week of Jan. 29: Jones, Lewis, Powers, Wood

Francis P. Jones died on January 22, 2014.  He was born on December 29, 1924 to Lilla and Thomas G. Jones II in Urbanna, Virginia.

He was married to Ann Doar Jones for 64 years.  They had two children, Francis Jones, Jr. and Beverley Upshur, and three grandchildren.

He was a World War II veteran and served in the Navy for three years.  He retired from Westvaco, a forest products corporation now named MeadWestvaco.  At retirement he was manager of Virginia Folding Box Company in Richmond, Virginia.

He and his wife moved to Northumberland County and spent 20 odd years on the banks of the Yeocomico River before moving to Warsaw, Virginia.  He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf.

He grew up in Tappahannock, Virginia, graduated from Christ Church School and attended Hampden Sydney College before joining the Navy in 1943.

He was a member of Cople Parish Episcopal Church.  He is survived by his wife and children and grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Yeocomico Episcopal Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Ellen White and the Reverend Allen Hooker officiated.


Lydia Clark Lewis, 94, of Village, passed away on January 11, 2014. Lydia was born November 15, 1919. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Lydia joins her husband, Chester Lewis; parents, Hiram and Caro Clark; brothers, sisters, son-in-law, Bob Everhart and grandson, Ronnie Estep.

She is survived by her two daughters, Goldie Everhart and Mary Ryan; sister, Madeline Coates; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Totuskey Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Totuskey Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Grayson Smith, 152 Smithville Lane, Warsaw, VA 22572.


Winter D. “Buddy” Powers Jr., 83, of Farnham passed away Sun. Jan. 26, 2014 in Westmoreland Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Powers retired from C & P Telephone Co., was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, a U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria B. Powers; a daughter, Tammy P. Groves of Colonial Beach; a son, Winter D. Powers III of Deal Island, Md; a sister, Mary Catherine Palmer of Willamsburg; a  brother, Clark Powers of Madison County; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thurs. Jan. 30 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Fri. Jan. 31 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Aquia Episcopal Cemetery, Aquia.

Memorials may be made to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, VA 22443.

Sharon C. Wood, 39, of Colonial Beach, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014.

She is survived by her mother, Hazel Wood; a stepmother, Debbie Wood; a sister, Tammie Stafford; a brother, Shawn Daniels, and a bunch of nieces and nephews and a whole host of other friends and family.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan 23 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Interment was held private.
