Sea Scout Ship 258 is a co-ed unit division of the Boy Scouts, which enables boys and girls from the community to have fun and learn about sailing and other maritime activities.
The age group ranges from 14 years to 21 years old. Ship 258 currently consists of five members, two of which are college age. While the focus of the ship is learning sailing skills, that’s not all the scouts do, they also kayak, participate in parades, go camping, visit maritime hubs such as Annapolis and Norfolk, build boats, and much more. The scouts have a large part in running the ship, so any interesting event or activity is up for consideration.
The ship was chartered in 2012, and since then the group has been meeting at the Boathouse Marina in Colonial Beach. Bill Bowman provides the scouts with a marina to operate the boats, teaches them how to service their vessels and allows access to plenty of space to store the boats.
The scouts are looking to recruit; no knowledge of sailing is required to join. That’s the best part of Sea Scouts: onecan learn something new and interesting while having a blast!
