Seven teams to compete over holiday

The holiday season is here and local basketball teams are preparing for the final curtain call before the district season begins in January. Out of the 12 varsity teams, nine will continue to playing after Christmas break.

Locally, Rappahannock will send their boys’ and girls’ teams to Montross for the annual Golden Eagle Booster Club Classic to face Washington & Lee in a non-district game.

The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game

The Essex girls’ and boys’ teams will be spread out with at least 90 miles between them.

On Dec. 27, the Essex Lady Trojans will compete in Caroline High School’s Christmas Tournament facing AAA Chancellor at 6:30 p.m. Their game will come after the home team faces John Marshall in game one at 5 p.m.

Should Essex win over Chancellor, they will return to face the winner of game one on Dec. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

The boys’ will play starting on Dec. 27 at 6 p.m. against Charles City in game one. If Essex wins, they will play in four on Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Should the lose, they will play at 6 p.m. in game three on Dec. 28. The opponents in game two are Jamestown and Surry.

The Northumberland girls’ and boys’ teams also will be spread out after Christmas. The boy’s will  compete for a tournament, while the girl’s will play to prepare for the district season to begin January.

The girls’ team will travel to Fuqua High School and the boys to Kettle Run High School.

Last year the boys’ team had success in the Kettle Run tournament winning in the opening round, but they fell in the championship game to Stafford. Northumberland is expected to play them in a rematch on Dec. 27 in game one at 6 p.m. The losing teams of those games will play on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. following by the winning teams at 7:30 p.m.

In the girls’ series of games, Northumberland will play Henrico at 6 p.m. Then against Bluetsone the next day at 6 p.m.

And finally, the undefeated Lancaster girls varsity team will travel to Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield Dec. 27-28.

In game one Lancaster will face Nansemond River  on Dec. 27 and then on Dec. 28 against  Meadowbrook. Both games will be played at 3 p.m.

The Northern Neck District regular season tips off following New Year’s.

On Jan. 3, the girls basketball teams will begin with Colonial Beach at Rappahannock, and Northumberland at Washington & Lee.

The boys will begin on Jan. 4 with Rappahannock at Colonial Beach  and Washington & Lee at Northumberland

All JV games begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity at approximately at 7:30 p.m.

Essex’s boys’ and girls’ teams will tip off on Jan. 8  against Colonial Beach. The girls will host their game in Tappahannock, while the boys head to the  high school closest to the Potomac River.

And Lancaster will suit up on Jan. 9 to play Washington & Lee. The Eagles will host the Red Devils in Montross while the ladies will play outside of the Town of Kilmarnock.

All JV games begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity at approximately at 7:30 p.m.
