Brittany – Blake Sandy, an Eighth Grader at the Montross Middle School won 3rd place in the Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA) Middle School Essay Contest. Ms. Sandy received $50, an oyster cage, and a TOGA cap, awarded at the annual TOGA membership meeting held recently at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS).
“This year we had an extremely competitive contest with essays submitted from across the state of Virginia,” said Terry Lewis, newly elected President of TOGA and chairman of the contest. “Ms. Sandy should be very proud to receive this award, as should the area community. She submitted an outstanding essay about the various types of oysters. Her essay was picked among the top because it was well researched, well written, and a very interesting read. She certainly has a bright future,” Lewis said.
Sandy also did an outstanding job of reading her essay to the more than 130 TOGA members assembled in the auditorium. She was accompanied by her parents and nieces.
