The W&L Eagles varsity basketball team had three games in four days against the King George Foxes, King William Cavaliers, and Charles City Panthers on November 27, 29, and 30. They improved their record to (2-1) with Friday’s win. The Eagles fell behind early against the Foxes (13-26) in the first period and (25-44) at the half. The third period saw the deficit grow (34-61); in the fourth they put up 29 points to make it (63-77) final. Head Coach George Hunter said, “We aren’t in basketball shape yet; we’re behind the ball.” Things switched up for the Eagles in their next game versus the Cavaliers on Thursday; they took a first period (21-12) lead and were up (38-28) at the half. The Eagles increased their lead in the third (54-33) and won (62-52) to even their record to (1-1). Next on the schedule was the Panthers on Friday. They jumped out to a (5-0) lead and were ahead (9-7) at the end of the first period. The Panthers took their first lead (9-10) early in the second then the teams traded baskets and the visitors were up (20-21) at the half. The Eagles went ahead (27-26) with 3:00 to play in the third; they were up (38-28) when the period ended. They maintained their lead throughout the final eight-minutes to get a (55-43) win. Head Coach George Hunter said, “We have a few days to practice, so we’ll get some work done. We need to slow down; we are a good team when we take care of the ball, pass it around, and rebound.
