Tips for starting a plentiful at-home garden

Incorporating fruits and vegetables in our daily diet is crucial to ensure a healthy lifestyle; growing your own garden can make healthy eating easy and affordable. Although the weather has been fickle, spring is here, and if you are interested in growing your own food and flowers, you might want to start deciding what to plant and when to plant it. The three steps to starting a garden are deciding what to plant, where and when to plant them, and mastering how to nurture each plant uniquely. With these three tools under your belt, you are sure to be a successful gardener in no time!

Start by determining the fruits and vegetables you and your family enjoy eating. If you have kids, they are probably going to be more likely to eat healthy foods if they get to pick which ones they prefer and help grow them.

Next, do research on which foods are in season in the Northern Neck area. This “Fruit and Vegetable Availability Calendar” provided by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, lays out what foods will thrive in what months. This chart is not full proof, especially consider how fickle the weather has been, but it gives you an idea of what you can expect when beginning your own garden.
