The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity football team hosted the Essex Trojans on Friday, October 13, during its homecoming game. Prepared for an epic battle on the field, the Drifters started off strong, but ultimately were unable to prevent a Trojan defeat; the Trojans won 24-22..
After a stop on downs, the Trojans punted to the Drifters and the Drifters returned it up the middle for a touchdown and a 0-8 lead late in the first quarter. The Trojans connected for a 27-yard touchdown to tie the game 8-8. The home team picked off a bobbled pass attempt and went to the end zone to make the score 8-16. The Trojans were again stopped on downs again, the Drifters returned the Trojans punt for a touchdown and a 8-22 lead with 4:23 left in the second.
The visiting Trojans got the ball to start the third quarter, and drove down to the Drifters eight-yard line; they stalled and gave the ball over on downs. The Trojans defense held the Drifters on three downs. The momentum swung in the Trojans favor, and they scored on their next possession off an11 yard run to pull closer 18-22 with 5:08 left in the third. The Trojans took the lead on a 20-yard touchdown run 24-22 late in the third. The fourth was a defensive struggle, and the Trojans won 24-22. The Drifters will face Northumberland, Friday, October 20 at 7 p.m. The game will also be the team’s senior night.
