The Northern Neck District Volleyball Teams will soon be turning their focus to one another as they wind down their nonconference schedules.
Out of the district, there were two coaching changes, one to Rappahannock, which made it to the playoffs last year and another to an aspiring group from Colonial Beach.
Coach Woody Campbell returns from taking time off to lead the Rappahannock Lady Raiders following his tenure with Essex. Then in Colonial Beach, Chase Davidson will lead the Lady Drifters.
Along with Rappahannock, Lancaster returns this season with the goal to win the district after reaching the finals with coach Dave Zeiler.
The defending district champion Northumberland Lady Indians had a setback last week against region powerhouse Mathews earning their second loss of the season. But Northumberland coach Bonnie Swann was optimistic about her young team to start the season. They spent time this summer in camp like many teams working on fundamentals.
In Essex, coaches Brittany Sgroi and Kristin Patterson have a large number of returners that they believe have good chemistry. The Trojans only had one scrimmage to start the season, but won four of their five games thus far this season.
For the die-hard volleyball fan, upcoming rivalries should be interesting.
The contest between Northumberland and Lancaster will be a rematch of the district tournament finals. As for Rappahannock and Essex, Campbell was with Essex for a few seasons and is familiar with the team.
Lastly, both Washington & Lee and Colonial Beach both have put in some work training this summer. Coaches from both programs hope to see improvements from last season after missing the district tournament.
District play begins on Sept. 25 when Washington & Lee will host Essex, Lancaster will travel to Colonial Beach and Rappahannock will host Northumberland. All games start at 6 p.m. with the JV and Varsity follows after approximately at 7 p.m.
