Jenifer Broglin and Dayton Combs lead W&L in a race for the finish line.

The W&L Cross Country team hosted their first home meet of the 2017 season last Thursday, September 7.

The Eagles welcomed teams from Lancaster, West Point and King William for a beautiful afternoon race on the W&L 5K course. Good sportsmanship and camaraderie always are present for cross country events and this week at W&L was no exception.

The Lady Eagles won the girls’ race with a team score of 25. Jenifer Broglin remains undefeated winning her second race this year with a time of 21:30 followed by Celene King at 25:06. West Point came in second with 40 point followed by Lancaster with 57.

The boys race was won by the team from West Point at 27 points. Lancaster runners, D. Reed, and D. Veney, came in first and second individually with tied time of 19:36 however their team finished in second with 34 points. W&L came in third with 75.

Team scores are calculated by adding the place finish of the first five individual runners. For example, Broglin was first place (1), King finished in third (3), A. Carter was fifth (5). Whitney Wade finished in sixth (6) and Murillo finished in tenth (10). Add the place finishes together: 1+3+5+6+10= 25. Each team can consist of a total of seven runners allowing further displacement of competing teams.

Next Wednesday, September 13, the teams will be in Lancaster for a conference meet and on Saturday, September 16, W&L will travel to William and Mary in Williamsburg.
