Chief of Police, Bruce Hough presented the council with a slideshow on the benefits of Neighborhood Watch for the town. In past years the town had the program, but it has been nearly 15 years ago.
Hough is looking to restart the program for the town. Neighborhood Watch began in 1972. It was originally funded by the National Sheriff’s Association and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Neighborhood Watch consists of local residents who work with law enforcement to help reduce crime in their areas. Those who participate often patrol the area and report suspicious activity to the local police. They do not interfere with possible criminal activity on their own.
According to the slideshow, “Neighborhood Watch is Homeland Security at the most local level.”
More information will be forthcoming about the organization of Neighborhood Watch for Colonial Beach.
