Play ball! Westmoreland County Little League season has begun! The rain may have hampered the morning activities planned for opening day, but the afternoon sun allowed for the minor boys teams to take the field at Montross Middle School. Honored guest, Larry Green, CPA, threw out the first pitch to open the 2017 Spring Season.
Westmoreland Team Blue, or Team Swan, defeated the Orange Team Steffey with a final score of 4-1. Trentin Holmes, Phoenix Perry, Grayson Carey, and Chance Holmes all crossed home plate for Team Swan with Bryce Ramsey hitting the only RBI. Jaxson Delane earned the lone score for the orange team. With very few errors, both teams should be commended for their defensive play. Starting pitchers Grayson Carey and Jaxon Delane did tremendous jobs leading their teams from the mound and each throwing 75 pitches.
The major boys took the field next and the speed and skill increased. Westmoreland Blue, coached by Roni Saunders, defeated Westmoreland Orange coached by Gary Tompkins 7-1. Solid hits by blue were capped off by an out of the park home run by Darren Reeves that scored two runs for the blue team. Connor Benson started on the mound with Jordan Saunders as the closer. For the orange team Charlie Pietras started on the mound with TJ Grigsby as the closer.
As field conditions improve, the rest of the 16 teams will open their season. We can expect fun and excitement from each game and look forward to a great spring.
