The W&L Lady Eagles varsity basketball team were home versus the Caroline Lady Cavaliers on Thursday, December 6. In a back and forth, “you take the lead” “no, you can have it” game, the Lady Eagles came up short. They were behind early (6-9) with 4:27 left in the first period; at the end of the period the score was (12-15). A few quick turnovers gave them their first lead (16-15) one-minute into the second. The lead was pushed to four (19-15) with 5:47 to play in the first half. The visitors took back the lead (19-21) with half the period to go. The Lady Cavaliers were ahead (24-30) at the half. Head Coach Michael Fisher said, “We worked had at practice on taking care of the ball. We have to do the little things in order to beat a good team. I like the way we competed, but we need to win.” They did the little things to begin the third stanza and went up (31-30) mid-way through. The teams traded the lead until the Lady Cavaliers went up (36-39) with less than one-minute left. The quarter ended with the Lady Eagles down (38-42). The deficit was cut to one (43-44) with 5:08 left in the fourth. “Once we got into foul trouble, the players were tentative to make plays or apply pressure on defense. Our rebounding was better on both ends, so we are making progress,” stated Coach Fisher. The game came down to free throws and the Lady Eagles bounced off the rim; they loss (47-53).
