W&L Varsity Football Uniform Drive Begins

Posted on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 1:05 pm

School pride begins in many places. One of the most visible images is on the football field. Every Friday night throughout America student athletes line up and represent their schools in the game of football. Washington and Lee players are no different in wanting to present the best image possible on and off the field. However, currently it is becoming more and more difficult. As noted by head football coach, Joshua Wild, “We are trying to raise money, primarily, to equip the Varsity team in matching top and bottom uniforms for the home games. This past season we went out for home games with many jerseys missing parts of the word “EAGLES” on the front. The yellow bottoms that we wore with them were adequate but mismatching, with different shades of gold. My goal for the guys is to put them in a uniform they can be proud of.”
Coach Wild continues, “I would like to embrace the new with the old by implementing our past, present, and future. To do this, we are exploring uniform combinations that will incorporate the Carolina and Navy blue colors. Any money that we raise above our goal will go towards game day socks and dry-fit shirts for both the Junior Varsity and Varsity program.
His first fundraising attempt will be a letter asking for donations. With a goal of $8,000, the team is hoping the community and former athletes will come forward and make this goal a reality. The proposed uniform is $160.00 each. The team is also using an aging inventory of shoulder pads that “really” need replacement at $200 each. The funds raised will enable “our team to not only look sharper but to be more safely protected.”
As Coach Wild noted, “Our kids don’t get a lot in their lives. Thankfully, the free breakfast and dinner program at the high school have been a blessing. But when we went to the playoffs, some students did not have the $5.25 for the meal that we negotiated at a restaurant, and we had to pay out of pocket for that.”
With any sport, image is everything, especially one as visible as football. The W&L band looks great; the cheerleaders are always fashionable, so one does not want to see a ragged looking football team. Our teams work hard for their EAGLE PRIDE.
