The former Mid-Rivers Cancer Center in Montross will reopen in the summer of 2016 as the Mary Washington Regional Cancer Center, making radiation as well as other cancer treatments available in the Northern Neck again. The building is currently undergoing renovations.
Montross Town Manager Brenda Reamy said the Mary Washington center will likely open in June but she wasn’t certain. Initially the center will be open from 8 a.m.- noon with hours expanding as the need for service increases.
A full on-site radiation care team, including a radiation oncologist, radiation therapist, dosimeters, physicist and nurse, will staff the center. The Montross center will offer a full range of care, including diagnostics, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and support services.
Dr. Christopher Walsh, the former sole practitioner of Mid-Rivers Cancer Center, closed the center due to health reasons in 2014.
Reamy said Dr. Walsh had taken a fall in Fredericksburg and injured his back. Following his attempt to run the practice for 18 months following the injury he decided the stress on his back was too much to keep it going and the practice closed.
