The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity basketball team hosted the Essex Trojans and ran them off the court on Tuesday, January 7. The Trojans were the first on the scoreboard with a three-pointer (0-3); the Drifters matched the long range shot to tie the game (3-3) then they went up (7-3) with 6:05 to play in the first quarter and never looked back. Two minutes later the lead had grown to 11 (14-3) then (16-6) at the 2:56 mark. The home team poured it on by pressing the visitor ball handlers and converting defense to offense to make it a (28-13) advantage at the end of the first. With a ten to one run in the second period, the Drifters built their lead to (38-14) with 4:51 to go before half time. Colonial Beach made it (44-21) with 1:21 to play and were up (48-23) at the half. They maintained the 20 plus point advantage throughout the second half with a (51-27) score with 6:19 to go in the third period. The deficit for the Trojans was growing (60-31) with 3:46 to left in the third and they were up (67-33) with eight minutes to play. Head Coach Keith Dickerson pulled his starters to give the reserves some playing time in the fourth stanza. The Trojans scored some points, but the game was in the books; the time just had to tick off the clock. The Drifters were up (79-46) with 3:09 to go and (79-51) at the 1:43 mark left in the game. The (81-59) win was the first of the NND schedule. Corvin Davis led the team with 24 points and 6 ast, Jace Jett 17pts, Tavares Lucas 15pts, Trey Pietras 11pts, Charles Pietras 7pts, MJ Virgil 4pts, and Seth Jewell 3pts. Colonial Beach will play at W&L on Tuesday, January 14, and Northumberland at home on Friday, January 17.
